Did you know that you can use new features for the Google Home, Home Mini, and Chromecast before they become available to everyone? You must then register for the preview program. Android Planet tells how this works.
Google Home preview program
Google regularly rolls out new features to the Google Home, Home Mini and Chromecast, but you often have to wait for that. However, it is possible to download and use new firmware versions that contain features and other improvements. Google has a preview program for this, with which you can try out the latest functions directly, while you are also more than all other users.
Registering for the Google Home or Chromecast preview program is quite simple: just follow the step-by-step guide below. Please note: if you do not see the ‘Preview Program’ option, Google will not accept any new members at this time. It is then smart to check again later so that you can still register.
- Open the Google Home app on your smartphone;
- Tap “Home” on your devices, such as the Google Home (Mini) or Chromecast;
- At the ‘Settings’ you then see the option ‘Preview program’;
- Press the blue ‘Take part in program’ button and you will be registered immediately.
And that was it! You will then receive an e-mail with a confirmation of your registration. Conveniently, Google also lets you know by email when an update is rolled out, so you know when new features may be waiting for you.
It is also good to know that you do not download beta software with the preview program, but the firmware that is finished and contains no errors. You receive new features so only a little earlier, and that is of course nicely included.

Finally, keep in mind that you have to register separately for each device, and that – as mentioned – there are not always places available for the preview program. For example, only the preview program of the Google Home (Mini) was available with the undersigned, and there is no option for the Chromecast. If you want to leave the preview program again, follow the above steps again and simply tap on ‘Exit program’.
