Both smartphones were presented at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and will also be available in Europe from this quarter. They will probably be available in the Netherlands from March at the latest.
Alcatel 1C: an entry-level model with Android Go
The Alcatel 1C (2019) is the absolute entry model, with a suggested retail price of 70 euros. The specifications match that price: the 1C is not particularly powerful. The device has a 5-inch screen with a resolution of only 960 by 480 pixels, which creates a blurry image. On the back is a 5-megapixel camera, in front of a 2 megapixel. The battery capacity is a tight 2000 mAh.
The device has a Spreadtrum SC7731E chipset, with 1GB of memory and a tight 8GB of storage space. However, the Alcatel 1C runs on Android Go, a modified version of Android optimized for cheaper hardware. Android Go uses less storage space and has lighter apps. As a result, the 1C runs just a little more smoothly than with the regular version of the operating system.
Alcatel 1X: a remarkable amount for little money
For a few bucks more you get the Alcatel 1X (2019) in house. This model costs 120 euros and is equipped with the regular version of Android 8.1 (Oreo). The hardware is also a bit more powerful. The 1X has a 5.5-inch screen with 720p resolution, MediaTek chipset with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage space and a 3000 mAh battery.
Despite the low price, Alcatel still manages to cram a few notable features into the 1X. The device has a double camera on the back of 13 and 2 megapixels. You can use the secondary camera to add a bokeh effect to your photos. The 1X is also equipped with a fingerprint scanner, quite unique in this price range.
The two Alcatel are among the cheapest Android smartphones of the moment. Most other budget manufacturers, such as Xiaomi, Nokia and Motorola, focus on slightly more expensive devices from about 150 to 250 euros. Bargain hunters can only go to the French Wikio for the same priced devices, such as the Wiki View.
